- Client: National Association of ESEA State Program Administrators (NAFEPA)
- Website: https://nafepa.org/
- Service: Accessibility Assessment & Remediation
- Focus: Web Accessibility, WCAG, WordPress
The Challenge
NAFEPA’s website serves an education-focused audience and needed significant accessibility improvements to provide a more inclusive experience for users with disabilities.
Initial accessibility testing identified a substantial number of issues across the website. The site’s accessibility score in the testing methodology being used at the start of the engagement was approximately 40%, highlighting the need for a systematic remediation effort rather than isolated fixes.
OWLSystems’ Approach
OWLSystems reviewed the website to identify accessibility barriers and worked through the findings systematically, prioritizing issues that affected users’ ability to navigate, understand and interact with the website.
Rather than treating accessibility as a one-time visual exercise, the team addressed issues within the website implementation and reviewed the affected pages again after remediation.
Accessibility Remediation
The work focused on improving areas identified during accessibility testing, including page structure, content presentation, navigation and interactive elements.
OWLSystems reviewed and remediated accessibility issues across the website and then repeated testing to identify remaining problems and verify the implemented fixes.
Testing and Validation
Accessibility was tested before and after remediation so progress could be measured rather than assumed.
Under the testing methodology used for the project, the website’s accessibility score improved from approximately 40% to 100% following remediation.
This result refers specifically to the accessibility testing performed for the engagement and should not be interpreted as a claim that any website can be permanently or universally “100% WCAG compliant.” Accessibility requires continued attention as websites, content and technologies change.
The Outcome
NAFEPA moved from a website with numerous identified accessibility issues to a substantially improved digital experience with the issues identified by the project’s testing process addressed.
The engagement also demonstrated OWLSystems’ ability to take accessibility findings through the complete remediation cycle:
Identify → Prioritize → Remediate → Retest → Validate
Why It Matters
Accessibility remediation is most effective when it becomes part of normal website engineering rather than an activity performed only before launch.
The NAFEPA engagement strengthened OWLSystems’ practical experience in identifying and resolving accessibility barriers within an established website while preserving its existing content and functionality.
